The Human Equation: Unlocking Resilience in Downstream Oil & Gas

While digitalisation and AI have long been present in the downstream industry, new opportunities now exist to enhance business operations. Advanced AI, including large language models, now processes vast datasets to optimise operations and even pinpoint solutions for complex issues like catalyst degradation. Crucially, AI captures the invaluable, often undocumented knowledge of an experienced, aging workforce, ensuring critical insights are not lost to retirement.

The transition, however, presents its own set of challenges. Many organisations, captivated by new tech, struggle with effective implementation. A common challenge is internal resistance, often stemming from fears of job displacement. Given AI’s rapid evolution, digital roadmaps must be flexible, incorporating regular checkpoints to integrate disruptive new technologies.

Aligning Talent Strategy with Long-Term Goals

To achieve true operational excellence, organisations must look beyond efficiency and prioritise resilience. Resilience is defined through four pillars: problem-solving, empathy, emotional regulation, and self-confidence. By empowering employees to actively shape processes, organisations foster genuine ownership and commitment, vastly reducing implementation resistance.

A reactive talent strategy is insufficient in today’s rapidly changing environment.

By integrating technology with well-defined processes and a robust change leadership strategy, organisations can cultivate psychologically safe teams.

To future-proof operations, key investments include automating business processes, expanding asset monitoring, and importantly, empowering their people. Educating frontline operators on refinery economics and providing them with timely, relevant data can significantly boost profitability. AI is the critical enabler here, supporting and amplifying human capabilities, not replacing them.
